Dear blogshop owners,

I will blog on how to start a blog shop and where to get supply. In addition, I will blog on my work for http://blogshoplist.homeip.net Hope many new blog shop owners will get help from my blogs. Blog shop costs almost nothing. To start a blogshop, it only needs your time, hard work and lots of creativity! And most importantly, your stick-to-it-iveness (Usually, it take about a year for your blogshop to take off!). Most successful "new" blogshops are not new at all, their owners have been around for quite sometimes, like previously partnered with someone else. As a matter of fact, she has past experience on where to get her regular stock, current mailing list and some fashion sense. It is always a learning in process and I hope you enjoy the journey. Official Release of Facebook Shop - yongshopping

Hi everyone, good news!

here is the official release of facebook shop. It lets you create a shop inside your facebook. You customer can now order directly in your facebook profile.

Notice there is a shop tab for your friends to view your products. You can use photos from any web server such as picassa, photobucket and facebook. Click here to view my actual facebook shop.

Each time you received an order, you will be notified convenient on your facebook home page. Below shows there are 7 new orders in my facebook shop - yongshopping.

All your customer order (and even your purchase from other facebook shop) are listed. Here you can easily find the customer email, address and purchase item photo.

Facebook is the upcoming fashion shop. It makes selling so easy. Many shops are using their facebook profile to sell. Uploading photos from computer to facebook is as easy as 123. Now I am adding a shop feature inside your facebook profile. Your customer can easily order at your profile!

Blogshop owner payment from buyer

I observe that as a blog owner, verify payment from customer is a tedious work. If a buyer ATM or bank transfer money to my OCBC bank account, I have no idea I have received the money unless I check my ibank daily. I do not know who pay if she uses ATM transfer money. If she uses ibank, I will get her Nick name.

I will be working on an automatic payment verification, that alert you when a buyer has paid. You can skip the payment verification and know that the money is already in your account, go ahead and mail the good.

However, I will need more feedback from you. Please comment if you need payment verification service. And any idea how it can benefit you and how it should work. Your comment is very important so that I know there is enough people who want payment verification auto service and make commitment to develop the free service. There are about 20 suppliers in City Plaza now targeting online fashion blogshops

Just a quick update of suppliers in City Plaza. Due to the high growth of livejournal and facebook shops, there are about 20 suppliers in City Plaza. Half of these suppliers started less than a year ago. As more and more blog owners are coming to City Plaza to source, more existing wholesalers are changing their fashion from aunt to teens and young adults. Not surprisingly, some of these new suppliers are daughters and sons of those old timer in City Plaza.

Be happy, there are more suppliers to choose from now. And suppliers have to provide better services due to the increased competition.

Yesterday, I meet up a girl who wants to start a blogshop at IKEA Alexandra. Similar to other new blog owners, she wants a blogshop to buy new clothes for herself and to sell them for a profit. That is the motive for all blogshop business.

Additionally, she is asking me for some code to make her livejournal theme. Simple code like HTML may come handy. I remember once people ask me for the code to make a "LJCut" in blogger. The coding is easy and you just need some guide on how to place it.

I find that adding control may be a good things to a market. The popular community at livejournal are sgselltrade and sgflea.

Both markets are regulated by moderators. To make browsing effective and something new to the buyer, seller can only post every 5 days at sgselltrade. They tends to have more buyers than other "no government" community.

Should the community member regulates themselves or should a small group of moderators regulate the posts? I do not understand what benefit people have being a moderator.

To attract buyers to blogshoplist and make browsing more easy, I will add a control to update advert text to once a week.

Just talk to a new blog owner, and she notices there is a trend for new comers with their own design. However, these new comers are not new at all. Most are experience blog owners partnering with someone new. If you come across someone new and doing very well, do comments here.

Improve on blogshoplist

I am looking for improvements to be made on blogshoplist. One is to add a wiki for suppliers. Any blogshop owners can "complain" about the unfair business of any suppliers in City Plaza. If it is not listed here, you can create an entry for the supplier, add in your comments. It will give blogshop owners more power if they are treated badly. Online blog customers have power in the beginning. Now blogshop owner have the power. I wonder when will be a time for suppliers to have the power too? :)

So if you have any ideas or comments to improve my service to you, please write now. You do not need to leave any email but if you want me to get back to you for the progress, you may leave your email here....

Updated: The wiki for suppliers is ready. If you have been unfairly treated by a supplier, you can go here and tell us your story. If the supplier is not listed, you can add it easily by yourself. You need only to type in the supplier shop name and unit number, select Wholesaler from the dropdown and click post button. The wiki is a public tool to keep everyone honest including the suppliers.

Remember what you write may send a death note to the shop, so write with mercy...:)

Vietnam is a romantic place. The city I went to is Ho Chi Minh. It is a bit commercialized but overall, I like the place. You will love it if you enjoy your history lesson. The hotel that we stayed is just beside the famous red market, Ben Thanh - a one floor combination of food, clothes, fresh meat and souvenirs.

The fashion are very French influenced. Ladies from teen to grandmother wear sexy "low cut" top. What is so discovery is the cooling material used in making them. They are so comfortable to wear. You do not feel any heat with them. Will try to import to Singapore (No one is doing that now).

If you are looking for wholesale, you may be disappointed! The night market is all that you can buy. The Vietnam market is big but they are very well limited by their communist rule. Market stopper includes order by law declaration of bringing more than US$500 to the country.

The interesting places to visit are the red brick Cathotic church built by the French a hundred year ago at the junction of the busy road, the once bombed reunion palace yelling victory over the US Army, the colourful boat restaurants by the river for the rich and the S$2.50-per-ticket with no air-con cinema (interior look more like an underground bomb shelther... they gives me fond memory now). Except for the greedy taxis driver at the airport, the people on the whole are pretty friendly and honest. And the first thing to learn when you reach Vietnam is how to cross the road - it is full of motorcycles.

Warning to go Bangkok for sourcing for the next 2 weeks

It seems that Bangkok is in a state of emergency. I strongly advised to postphone going to thailand for sourcing. It is in the state where the people are out of control. No government situation where the police may abuse his power. I have encountered 3 police road block the last time i went to Bangkok, and you are at the mercy of the situation.

If you have a design that are out of stock, you can still get it at City Plaza. Anything that is already made can be ordered and made from China. You can look out for the shop locally at the time being.

Starting a blog shop

The biggest challenge for a new blog shop is to get people to visit her shop. Often new owner finds that almost nobody visit. Listing on blogshoplist is free but it is only visible for the first few days, after that, it will be down the list.

The only way to get a constant supply of visitors is to stay permanently on the top row. If you can invest $3 a month, you can get steady supply of new customers daily. And it is easier for existing buyer to find and go to your site again.

Making My Own Design

Several blog owners have asked me how to find manufacturer to produce their own design. Having your own label elevates you from the ground competition where everyone have the same thing. You could also sell at a higher price.

Many of the established blog owner advertise that their items are exclusive. How do they make their stock? It is not as difficult as you think. Most of them (HHV, Lylarose etc) actually find the answer at City Plaza. To do that, bring along your design with some vital measurement. Simply cut out a page from popular magazine will do. However, the made quantity is usually at minimum 100 pieces per design for factory customization.

If you are new, here is some help to begin with. Personally I know of only one shop in City Plaza that can make 20 pieces for a new design. Price ranges from $8 to $20 per piece depending on material. It is located at #03-xx at city plaza... I should not write more or other owners want to squeeze my neck :)

Dont forget to ask for your own blogshop name sewn onto your merchandise!

Going to Bangkok tomorrow again

Hello everyone and happy Chinese New Year!

I am going to BK tomorrow morning. It looks like the air ticket is cheaper now to Thailand for only $150. Recently, there are too many strikes in Bangkok and the airport is highly targeted. However, in the shopping wholesale center, it is business as usual. If you ever visit Thailand and do not mind a road side seafood, do contact me for a map. It is very good and cooked by a friendly grandmother. A meal for 2 is only 200 Batt, which is about S$9. It has dragon prawns, crabs, shells and sotong. It is much better than those in the Chinatown and restaurants.

Supply interrupted

recently until now, the bangkok airport is closed due to people protest. Most of the supplies from bangkok are interrupted. Cargo by air has slowed to a stop. The situation does not look good for the coming weeks.

If you are blog owner, you may want to keep a bigger stock. However, you may still find very few CP suppliers managed to get stock from bangkok. Do come on today at CP as new stock has just arrived. Now, every monday and friday are no longer the "fixed" day for new arrivals. Do leave your name to your suppliers, to notify you when supplies arrive... :)

How to increase your visitors by 100%?

I have discovered that you can increase your website visitor by 100% by having a facebook account. It is some thing that i do not understand but here is how to produce it

To start a shop in facebook, go directly to http://apps.facebook.com/mywardrobe/index.php

1) sign up a free facebook account and a link to your livejournal or blogspot.
2) add all your friends' email to invite them to sign up facebook. Most of them are already have.
3) request friends from your friends' friend. Try to hit 50 friends.
4) At the same time, add the facebook application: MyShop - It lets you list all your items for sale directly on your profile.
5) Invite your friends to add MyShop. As they join MyShop, your shop will appear in their facebook profiles. As your friends of friends add MyShop, their profile will also display your shop. It propagates to 6 degree of friends! It works like a atomic bomb!
6) You will see a 100% increase in your visitors.

Sourcing Fashion in KL Malaysia

One day sourcing at Malaysia is popular among the Indonesia shop owners from Batam. These owners travel weekly to City Plaza, but some go as far as KL to source for new and cheaper fashion. You will meet very few singaporean blog owner over there.

The wholesale center at KL is nothing like CP. It is rows and rows of 4 stories shop houses. Most shops have very friendly chinese staffs (a vast difference from our local salegirls), and will go a mile to make you happy, like offering you sweet and water, seat, and recommendations of new arrivals. There are as good as those in Guangzhou (but china salegirls are much more practical, they ignore you the moment you have pay money...) Often, they will warn you about the horrible snatch thief in Malaysia. Do not be afraid. As long as you keep an alert and on the way home before night fall, you are quite safe :)

Estimated there are about 200 wholesale shops in Hang Tuah. They focus mainly on young adults fashion and have much more variety while CP has only 20% selling young people clothings. The main focus of City Plaza is still on aunt fashion, but it is changing. Their prices are slightly lower than CP and they do cater to small buyers but no retail. Most shops are clean and well designed, some very creative. Their fashion are as updated as in singapore. Their stocks are mainly from China. One thing you cannot help to notice is that they use long white translucent plastic to contain their stock on the floor in every shop.

The coffee shop nearby serves good food, but i recommend the small island stall at the center of the wholesale center, serving mainly noodles. They are cheap and good, cant find here.

The walking required are rather long to visit all the shop houses. At one end are slops and steps where you may have to control your luggage well to move along. ATM machines are across the streets so you do not need to carry much cash. Use your local ATM card to draw enough money after you negotiate price with the shop people.

Now the adventurous part, how to get to the interesting place

1) Take a tour bus from singapore (go to lavender mrt, walk to golden mile, and buy a ticket, usually cost about $35, board the bus and here you go!) Take about 6 hours to reach KL. Make sure you go in the early morning, so you have enough time to source in KL.

2) Once you reach KL bus terminal (usually the bus drop you nearby), be a bit more alert. The moment you align, the local people will stare at you, walk to you and offer you taxis or things that you will not understand, unless you know malay. Ignore them and walk away quickly. Do not talk to them. Some are just pimp, getting customers. You are actually very close to the chinatown, but dont go chinatown, as you do not have much time.

3) You will notice the bus terminal building is white. All the bus go to the basement. The first floor is for food and ticketing. Look for the exist to the Plaza Kakyat train station (just like our LRT). Walk up the stairs between the bus terminal and a hill side. The walk is about 100m and the pavement is quite isolated. Buy the train ticket to Hang Tauh Station. The ride is only a station away. Enjoy the ride, the train is as pleasant if not better than our MRT! I love the train system in KL, there are interesting with at least 4 train companies interchanging the confused commuters. Most people you see in the train are "educated" and dress professionally. 4) Align next stop, only one way out to the the main road, turn left and left again for a old staircase down the slop to the old shop houses. And here you are, you are at one corner of the Malaysia fashion wholesale center! It is called Ho Ching Yuan or Jalan Kenanga! Hope it does not rain. The wholesale center is not sheltered.

Safety First...
1) Wear as low class as you can. Common sense! You will be attracting lots of attention in KL street. So do show that you are worth the robbery.

2) Go with your friends. Going alone to KL is strong no advisable (It is not Bangkok, you know). The people will want to walk up to you and start talking to you if you are alone.

3) Leave the place latest by 3:30pm. The night falls quickly with your full luggage. Most chinese shop owners are friendly, approach them for direction if you are loss. They are everywhere selling petty things in the bus terminal. If you cannot catch the bus home (due to full house), stay a night at the hotel opposite the bus terminal(really not bad and clean, about $120 ringgit) and enjoy the KL Time square by train the next day before you leave. If you do not have the money, stay at the 24 hour Mac Donald nearby. It is safe inside at least.

It is created for the coming long term recession where teens want to sell their pre-loved belongings to increase their allowance for school and food. It is an easy way to sell your things to your friends via your profile. Your friends can help to sell your things too on their profile just by adding my wardrobe.

Teens are excluded in ebay trading due to ebay credit card requirement. Most teens sell on their blog but it is not easy to bring people to their blog. With facebook, most teens has more friends and word of mouth to bring customers to them.

My wardrobe will has a basic search for items on sale. You can label your item as sold, pending, available or anything.

My wardrobe is mainly text input for items.

As for fashion, it allows once to add their facebook album or livejournal or blogspot photos automatically.

Some observation of online fashion selling

Lately I am convinced that certain factors determine whether an item will sell on a blogshop. My observation at my wholesale business, 2 blog owners with the same item to sell. One can sell a total of 50 pieces while the other can only sell 2 pieces.

The factors are listed in according of importance in a first time buying...

1) Item appears attractive on the photos with pretty model 50%
2) Item is short in supply 20%
3) Advertise the items & word of mouth 10%
4) Price inexpensively 5%
5) Reputation of the shop 5%
6) Description of the item 5%
7) Service of the owner 5%

Basic requirement
1) Size and material of the item
2) Price
3) Availability of stock

In long run
1) Regular updates (weekly) of beautiful photos
2) Honest and fast service

Here is a brief introduction of how to get your stock in Singapore. I have to remind myself not to write too much as most established blog shop owners would want to bite me to death. Popular blog shops such as lylarose and hervelvetvase source weekly at a very old shopping complex. You may never heard of it, but go ask your mother, she will know the golden days of City Plaza. And it will be the place where you meet all the blog owners. I have to aknowledge that most popular blog owners does not want me to share what i am writing now, but do not be selfish, the fashion market is big enough for more new blog shops. Some of you are making 10k a month!

City Plaza is an orange building with a huge blue and red logo on top it, located very near to Paya Laber MRT.It has 18 stories. 5 are mainly fashion wholesale and retail shops. The rest is private apartments owned by these wholesalers to store their fashion stocks. From the MRT station, you can easily see City Plaza and it takes you 5 minutes to walk.

The main business is at at level 3. These shops get their goods mainly from thailand and china. Without fail on every Monday and Friday morning, new stocks arrives in dark green straw bag. City Plaza opens as early as 8am on Monday and Friday. The rest of the days, City Plaza starts after 10 am.

Avoid Sunday when the foreign maids and construction workers stay the whole day to socialize and remit money back to Malaysia, Indonesia, Fillipinnes, Blagadash and India. Fight usually breaks out among the workers from Eastern Malaysia.

One of the key for the success of popular shops is to buy the minimum stock per design. Lylarose takes only 1 design 1 piece most of the time. If it sells, she will return to order bulk for her already paid customers. Such business practices guarantee her making money and zero unsold stock. However, most of the wholesalers in City Plaza would ask you to take 18 pieces of mainly same design. It is a big risk for new blog shop owner. There are shops that only requires you to take 6 pieces of different design.

I will blog how to "import" from Bangkok. I will also upload photos of streets and wholesalers in KL, Bangkok and Guangzhou in my coming post. Do come back for more details, photos and directions on how to travel safely to these places.

I am thinking to add a item search feature. It is very similar to the existing search shop, available on every page of blogshop.homeip.net. How it works?
1) User enter item to search e.g. Maxi dress
2) Return all blogshops that has maxi dress in their advertisement text. Maybe should use the tag feature of livejournal. What do you say?
3) User click on the result to go to seller site or the yellow grid icon to preview.

There may be a huge return of more than 20 blogshops for maxi dress, I guess. If that is so, the result will return based on the these factors sorted by their importance.
1) revelence of search words
2) per click cost determined by blogshop owner
3) No. of review (death notes)
4) No. of recommendation votes

Basically blogshoplist will be free for 95% users. The rest of 5% may be willing to pay for click for the item/shopname search. Any comments are strongly welcome and i promise i will consider your thought and reply to every comments.
